Is Ghee Good for Lips? What to Know Before You Try

Many Indian homes have used ghee on dry lips for generations. This guide explains why it is traditionally used, how to use it, and when dry lips need more than a balm.

Why lips dry out so easily

The skin on your lips is thin and has no oil glands of its own, so it loses moisture quickly. Cold, dry or windy weather, air conditioning, dehydration and habitual lip licking all make it worse.

Why ghee is traditionally used

In Ayurveda, ghee (ghrita) is valued as a soothing, nourishing substance that is used on the skin as well as in food. As an emollient, it helps to soften the skin and slow moisture loss. Traditional use is not the same as clinical proof, so treat it as a gentle, familiar option rather than a medical treatment.

How to use ghee on your lips

  • Apply a thin layer whenever your lips feel dry, and again before bed.
  • Use clean fingers or a clean applicator to keep the product fresh.
  • A balm in a small tube or pot is more convenient than ghee from the kitchen. Herbostra’s Ghee Lip Balm uses cow’s ghee as its key ingredient and the directions are to apply a thin, even layer as often as your lips need it.

Habits that help

  • Drink enough water through the day.
  • Avoid licking or picking at your lips.
  • Apply lip balm before you go out in strong sun or wind.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if your lips stay cracked for weeks, if the corners of your mouth are sore, or if you notice swelling, sores or colour changes. These can have causes that no balm will fix. If you are allergic to milk products, test a small spot first or choose a different product.
